Dairy: white lies

Dairy: white lies by Pax Ahimsa Gethen is such an important read. Recently I also read an article in Le Nouvel Obs similar to the NY times article.

This paper was mentioned, it’s free to download.

A thought crossed my mind just now while reading a vegan blog: we criticise fast food culture out of privilege. When I was forced to eat dairy in spite of my lactose intolerance (I did not know I had), growing up as vegetarian (:. fed LOTS of dairy), I’d throw away my lunch or rather give it to a stray dog and bought chips or dholl puri, the only thing I could afford with a coin when I was given any pocket money was that, Mauritian fast food (incidentally vegan). Other days I’d starve just because I felt grossed out by what I was given for lunch. Even that was probably better than dairy.

Produits non testés sur animaux – kind brands avail in French stores.

I wish you a good year full of useful struggles, productive resistance and joy. I wonder if any of these brands are available in Mauritius since French products abound – a reminder about this list and the DIY page. Melvita products are the only (leaping bunny approved) product I’ve seen from the following list and Dr Bronner’s soaps (including fragrance free) are also available, at the 3 Health Solutions. Please leave a comment if you spot any other products, or if you sell them.

Soy – the facts

From a doctor – Holly Wilson MD

From a medical librarian

Finally The Truth About Soy mentions the Weston A. Price Foundation too, behind the myths of soy being harmful in spite of Harvard publications and other research.

Sur le soja, citant plusieurs études (in French, citing 27 research articles including the below-mentioned)

The last research I read this year is

PCRM: New Study Shows Soy Products Protect Women from Breast Cancer Recurrence

A new report in the July edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that women previously diagnosed with breast cancer have less risk of cancer recurrence if they consume soy products. The report combined the results of prior studies, including a total of 9,514 women. Those who consumed the most soy products were 25 percent less likely to have their cancer return, compared with those who tended to avoid soy products.

Some women avoid soy products after a cancer diagnosis. The study and several previous studies show that soy products are actually protective.
